This special opportunity is for district teams. Send a team of 1-3 educators to learn in depth with Dr. Elsa Cardenas-Hagan about teaching structure literacy to Spanish Speaking students. Each team will receive one WELLS set and learn how to utlize these tools and embed them directly in with your structured literacy materials. Participants in the training program learn the essential components of literacy instruction for English language learners. Specific strategies for designing and implementing effective transition lessons which build upon native language literacy skills will be included. Participants will learn the language and literacy conceptsthat transfer across languages. They will also understand first and second language and literacy development and how to incorporate the WELLS lessons as prescribed. In addition, cross-linguistic exercises will be demonstrated and practiced. Case studies will be reviewed whereby data is analyzed and lessons are designed accordingly. Teachers also receive assessment forms in Spanish and English. This seminar will help instructors implement appropriate and effective lessons for developing English language and literacy skills among Spanish speaking English language learners.
Elsa Cárdenas-Hagan
Elsa Cárdenas-Hagan, Ph.D., is a bilingual speech-language pathologist and a certified academic language therapist. She holds a doctorate degree in Curriculum and Instruction. She is the President of Valley Speech Language and Learning Center in Brownsville, Texas, and is an Associate Research Professor for the Texas Institute for Measurement Evaluation and Statistics at the University of Houston. Elsa’s research interests include the development of early reading assessments for Spanish-speaking students in addition to the development of reading interventions for bilingual students. She was the co-principal investigator of a longitudinal study funded by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development and the Institute for Education Science, examining the oracy and literacy development in English and Spanish of Spanish-speaking children. Elsa currently serves as the Vice-Chairperson of the International Dyslexia Association, Chairperson of the National Joint Committee on Learning Disabilities, and was a past board member of the National Academic Language Therapy Association. She has authored curricular programs, book chapters, and journal articles related to oracy and literacy development for English language learners.

*Cost of all workshops are based on membership in an Indiana Educational Service Center (ESC). Any registrants who are not members of an ESC in the state of Indiana will be required to pay the non-member fee.

* Registrants who notify WVEC of their cancellation on or before the registration deadline date will not be required to pay the registration fee.
* Registrants who cancel after the registration deadline but before the workshop date or call to cancel on the day of the workshop will pay 50% of the registration fee.
* Registrants who neglect to call or notify the WVEC of their cancellation will be responsible for paying the full fee.
* On official school corporation weather-related cancellation days, registrants will not be required to pay registration fees.
