Are you a caregiver* seeking to reduce your stress and improve your well-being? Do you enjoy nature, or have you enjoyed nature at some time during your life? This program is for you! Research establishes that regular engagement with nature improves cognitive, physical, and emotional health and can significantly boost caregivers' well-being. These impacts do not require weeks-long backpacking trips or access to gardens and forests; habits of nature can be established in just minutes a week and in any setting. This program will provide you with the knowledge and skills for incorporating habitual interaction with nature into your life. You will learn about the science of habit formation and practical tools for forming a nature habit. You will engage in activities reflecting the various forms that habits of nature can take---sitting, reading, walking, gardening, writing---and will complete the program having developed a plan to foster your health through your habit of nature.

*Not sure if you are a caregiver? This course defines a caregiver as a person providing care or assistance (paid or unpaid) that supports the health and wellbeing of another. Examples of caregivers include friends, volunteers, neighbors, family members, teachers, and professional health care and wellness practitioners. All caregivers are encouraged to register.

About the Instructors

Jane Saiers and Darin Knapp own and operate RambleRill Farm in Hillsborough, where they grow certified organic fruits, vegetables, and mushrooms; raise laying hens and Nigerian dwarf goats; and offer nature-based education and experiences. Jane is a forest therapy guide and registered horticultural therapist. Darin recently retired from a 30-year career researching the neural bases of behavior at UNC. The two became interested in the science and practice of habit formation during their early years in graduate school while earning doctorates in neuroscience and psychology. They have learned that nearly everyone can be happier and healthier by spending daily time connecting with nature.
