Native Edible Plants in Your Landscape

This class will focus on fruiting trees, shrubs and vines, native to the Southeastern U.S., that are relatively easy to grow. We will cover how to choose a planting location for these plants, how to grow them successfully, as well as the benefits to your local environment of growing these plants in your landscape. There will be a walking tour in the NCBG Display Gardens at the end of the class to see some of these plants growing in gardens and habitat displays.

About the Instructor

Mary Jac Brennan is a retired NC Cooperative Extension agent who specialized in fruit and vegetable horticulture for 10 years. Mary Jac developed the Community Garden Resource program and the Urban Farm school while working in Forsyth County. Currently, Mary Jac consults on garden designs, farm management, and community horticulture projects. She can be reached at, @maryjacbrennan on Instagram, and @msgardener123 on Twitter.

Katherine Meehan is the nursery assistant at the North Carolina Botanical Garden. Her responsibilities include propagating southeastern native plants, via seeds and cuttings, for use in the NCBG landscape and for sale to the public. Katherine previously worked at a local watershed organization in Durham, where she designed and installed rain gardens (planted with southeastern native plants) to help mitigate residential stormwater runoff into the watershed. She has a B.A. in Anthropology from UC Berkeley, and a certificate in Agricultural Sustainability from Central Carolina Community College. Katherine lives in Durham.
