This session is the first session for a year-long sharing community examining alternative grading practices. If you are interested in learning more about this sharing community or getting involved, please come to this session! All folks interested in alternative grading systems are welcome. If you have questions or comments about the sharing community, please contact Dana at: firstname.lastname@example.org
Alternative grading systems include specifications or levels grading, contract grading, portfolio assessment, and ungrading. At the heart of these grading systems are flipping traditional grading on its head so that evaluative feedback is seen as a tool for learning as opposed to an external motivator or punishment that grades often feel like for students.
In our introductory session, we will have introductions from group members before doing an overview of alternative grading systems. We will spend majority of our time discussing our experiences or thoughts around alternative grading systems and tips for starting with an alternative grading practice in the fall semester, if desired (e.g., syllabi statements, introducing students to alternative grading systems). Finally, we will end by determining our fall meeting schedule, including meeting frequency, duration, and dates/times.
