Understanding the Correlation between Multicultural Education and Student Achievement is a webinar ONLY – please do not come to the CTE office.


If you know me, you can teach me. This interactive presentation will explore issues of diversity, engagement and how every teacher must first, be willing to be the student. We will further consider how concepts of race, ethnicity, class, gender and culture intersect in school curriculum. Participants will be provided with viable tools and strategies that can be easily implemented to aid teachers in building relationships with students and gaining the positionality needed to learn from students from a variety of cultures and backgrounds. To further understand the magnitude of being granted both the access and the acclaim of the title – Teacher.


This workshop is an elective session for a certificate of completion in Teaching Towards Inclusive Excellence.


** Registration Procedures Update **

In order for attendees to personally track their current registrations and attendance at certificate of completion workshops and events, the Center for Teaching Excellence requires that all registrants create an account in our registration system and login to register for all workshops.


If you have an existing training account with the Division of Human Resources, Office of Organizational and Professional Development, you do not need to create an account. You can login using your HR training username and password. By logging in to register for CTE events, your complete training record for both CTE and HR trainings will be available with a single account and login.


Participants must attend a workshop in its entirety to receive credit for the workshop in their training records. Late arrival and/or early exit from a workshop invalidates receiving credit. If technology issues require rescheduling of a workshop, participants must attend the workshop at the rescheduled time to receive credit. These policies apply to all CTE workshops/events, including workshops that qualify as requirements/electives for a certificate of completion.


Yasha Jones Becton

Yasha Becton is in her fourth year of teaching at the University of South Carolina. A three-time alumnus, Becton received her Bachelor of Science, Master of Education, and Doctor of Education degrees from the University of South Carolina. She has 12 years of experience in teaching on the secondary level and 5 years of administrative experience. Her areas of concentration include multicultural education and student achievement, particularly as it relates to classroom instruction, curriculum design, professional development, and parental involvement. Additional interests include how issues of social class, culture, and race intersect with the aforementioned areas. Becton also does extensive work within her community focused on building the capacity for families and schools to work collaboratively for better student outcomes.
