Class Purpose

This simulation-based tracheostomy education course will provide learners with an immersive, hands-on learning experience that is designed to improve patient safety, quality of care, and individual performance. The course is aimed at improving the private duty nurses' self-efficacy, knowledge, and skills in managing tracheostomy tubes and troubleshooting complications by providing a safe place for nurses to practice skills.

 


Objectives
  • Demonstrate how to manage tracheostomy emergencies in the home.
  • Increase knowledge of tracheostomies and caring for tracheostomies in the home.
  • Provide a safe place for nurses to practice skills in caring for tracheostomy patients.

 


What the Simulation Experience will Include
  • Online modules prior to the in-person simulation-based education
  • Simulation exercises on high fidelity mannequins that mimic real emergencies to facilitate communication skills and real-time responses
  • Hands-on experience with ventilators
  • Debriefing of learners to review and discuss simulation experience
  • Debriefing that provides learners with a chance to review performance, evaluate the effectiveness of action, and continue learning
