Course Description

The Kinesio Taping Specialty Pediatrics Course is an in-person elastic therapeutic taping course presenting advanced concepts and techniques of elastic therapeutic taping for the pediatric population. Attendees who have not taken a previous Kinesio Taping Fundamentals or Foundations courses will be required to complete a four hour virtual Kinesio Tape Fundamentals course online prior to attending this course.

This course will be held over an 8 hour period with a 4 hour online pre-course. The Kinesio online Pre-course must be completed prior to attending the course. The pre-course will present an overview of the development of the Kinesio Taping Method, Fundamental concepts, assessments and screening tests.

The Kinesio Taping Specialty - Pediatric course is designed to provide advanced Kinesio Taping techniques and problem-solving to physicians, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, massage therapists, athletic trainers, and other health professionals specializing in pediatrics. Kinesio Taping is a method of treatment for musculoskeletal and Myofascial disorders. Kinesio Taping can be used during physical activity and in conjunction with many therapeutic interventions. Attendees will review theory and basic taping techniques, learn advanced and combination techniques, and develop clinical reasoning skills relevant to the pediatric population. The course will also provide commonly used taping techniques for specific diagnoses, including cerebral palsy, hemiplegia, torticollis, and brachial plexus injury; as well as pediatric sports related injuries.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course the participant will be able to:

 

  • Develop proficient knowledge of basic Kinesio Taping principles, properties, and techniques.
  • Be able to identify three specific muscle synergies/patterns and Kinesio Taping techniques to facilitate muscle balance and alignment.
  • Learn four advanced Kinesio Taping techniques.
  • Become familiar with commonly used Kinesio Taping techniques for specific pediatric diagnoses.
  • Be exposed to adjunctive treatment options for specific pediatric diagnosis.
  • Be involved with problem solving strategies for treatment utilizing Kinesio Taping.

About the Instructors

Patricia (Trish) Martin, PT, Certified Kinesio Taping ® Instructor, retired as the Director of Therapy Services at Cleveland Clinic Children's Hospital for Rehabilitation. She currently works in private practice, treating, consulting and teaching. She specializes in lower extremity biomechanics, casting, splint fabrication, and taping in the treatment of children with orthopedic and neurological involvement. Trish has over forty years of experience in private practice, hospital, and clinic settings. She has experience in treatment of adults and children with neurological and orthopedic issues, as well as athletes. She has written articles on the use of Kinesio Tape ® in the pediatric population. She is pediatric NDT trained. Trish has presented courses on Therapeutic Taping ® for Alignment and Muscle Re-education, Adult Kinesio Taping ® Fundamentals and Whole Body Techniques, Kinesio Taping ® in Pediatrics, Pediatric Gait, and Interventions for Children with Brachial Plexus Injuries.

Audrey Yasukawa, MOT, Certified Kinesio Taping ® Instructor, retired as Chief of Occupational Therapy at Larabida Children's Hospital and now works as a consultant and teacher. Previously Chief of Occupational Therapy at La Rabida Children's Hospital in Chicago and supervisor at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago. She is pediatric and adult NDT trained and specializes in upper extremity casting for adults and pediatrics. Audrey has over forty years of experience as an occupational therapist in a rehabilitation center and pediatric hospital setting. She has published numerous research articles on the use of Kinesio Tape ® in the pediatric population. Audrey has presented courses on Upper Extremity Casting, Spasticity Management, Adult Kinesio Taping ® Fundamentals and Whole Body Techniques, and Kinesio Taping ® in Pediatrics, and Interventions for Children with Brachial Plexus Injuries.
