About the Course
The Environmental Health & Safety Academy is a unique course designed to provide you with the skills needed to identify, evaluate and control workplace hazards, particularly those found in academic and research settings. Part I of this course will specifically focus on EHS program management topics that every health and safety professional should consider. Part II of this course, which will be offered separately in 2023 (due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic situation), will provide a breadth of information on the important hard science topics that are essential for the profession. This is the twenty-fifth time the course will be offered, and the second-ever virtually!
Who Should Attend
EH&S Academy is developed especially for health and safety professionals, particularly individuals charged with maintaining the health and safety of their faculty, staff, students, and visitors. This course is helpful to anyone new to the health and safety field regardless of the industry. Experienced health and safety professionals new to the academic or government sector will find this course incredibly beneficial.

Unless otherwise agreed in writing by email from the SWCOEH CE staff, full tuition must accompany each online registration to ensure your registration and placeholder for a course or event with the Southwest Center for Occupational and Environmental Health (SWCOEH).

Q&A Session II |
Each Monday, we will kick off the week by joining a live virtual presentation through Webex, which will include a review of the session agenda and the engagement in content by listening and participating in presentations with content experts, with the Q&A sessions to follow.
After the Monday session, learners will have access via Canvas to the recorded presentations and the Q&A discussion, along with the PDF of the presentations.
Canvas access will begin on Friday, March 25, 2022 and end on April 30, 2022.
After participating in Part I of this training course, participants will be able to:
- Outline how universities and research organizations function, including their basic characteristics;
- Describe the intent and utility of the 50 questions to improve the safety staff's knowledge and safety awareness;
- Develop key performance measures and metrics customized for their own safety program;
- Design and deliver the most appropriate strategies of presenting performance measures and metrics to key constituencies, including upper management and regulatory officials;
- Discuss pathways of professional development, certification, and licensure for EH&S professionals.

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, EH&S Academy XXV will be hosted in two parts. Although not required to attend both parts of the course, we suggest attending parts I and II, and all sessions, as to gain the full breadth of knowledge this course has to offer!

Part II of this training course will allow participants to:
- Summarize the basic knowledge and procedures associated with risk management and insurance, fire and life safety, radiation, chemical and biological safety and environmental protection programs
- Identify the most common safety compliance challenges encountered in practice.
- Choose the most appropriate strategies to prevent safety problems.
- Implement the following safety programs: risk management & insurance, fire and life safety, radiation, chemical and biological safety, and environmental protection programs
- Choose the most appropriate strategies to maintain a safe work environment

The Southwest Center for Occupational and Environmental Health (SWCOEH) supports research, education and outreach in occupational and environmental health. The SWCOEH is housed within the Department of Epidemiology, Human Genetics and Environmental Sciences of the UTHealth School of Public Health. The SWCOEH was established in 1977 as a NIOSH-funded Education and Research Center (ERC), now one of 18 ERCs in the nation. In 1985, the SWCOEH became a World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Occupational Health. As of 2019, the SWCOEH has been officially approved as an affiliate of the NIOSH Total Worker Health program, strengthening a partnership spanning more than 40 years.
The mission of the SWCOEH Continuing Education (CE) Program is to serve as a training resource for professionals and decision-makers in the occupational and environmental health fields by delivering specialized courses in response to current training needs. Our ultimate goal is to improve occupational and environmental health. Our core subject areas are occupational medicine, industrial hygiene, occupational safety, hazardous substances and materials and and worker well-being.
