About the Course
The Environmental Health & Safety Academy is a unique course designed to provide you with the general skills needed to identify, evaluate and control workplace hazards, particularly those found in academic and research settings. This is the 25th time the course has been offered, and the first virtual offering!

Who Should Attend  
The course is developed especially for health and safety professionals, particularly individuals charged with maintaining the health and safety of their faculty, staff, students, and visitors.  This course is helpful to anyone new to the health and safety field regardless of the industry. Experienced health and safety professionals new to the academic or government sector will find this course incredibly beneficial.

Course Objectives

At the end of EH&S Academy training course, participants will be able to:

  • Summarize the basic knowledge and procedures associated with risk management and insurance, fire and life safety, radiation, chemical and biological safety and environmental protection programs
  • Identify the most common safety compliance challenges encountered in practice
  • Choose the most appropriate strategies to prevent safety problems
  • Implement the following safety programs: risk management &insurance, fire & life safety, radiation, chemical and biological safety, and environmental protection programs
  • Choose the most appropriate strategies to maintain a safe work environment

Couse Format:

This course will be conducted online through the Instructure Canvas learning management system and Webex virtual meetings. Each Monday, we will kick off the week by joining a live, online discussion forum with the respective weeks' content experts to review the agenda, overview weekly content, and enjoy a Q&A session with the experts and your peers! Learners will have one week to review each section in Canvas in preparation for the next live Webex review and Q&A session.

Applicants must be a full-time employee of the University of Texas System with main work responsibilities in the areas of Environmental Health & Safety and/or Risk Management.

Please do not register for the course until you receive the email communication confirming your acceptance and offering a discount code. A discount code will be emailed to you on acceptance for you to use during online registration.

The Southwest Center for Occupational and Environmental Health (SWCOEH) supports research, education and outreach in occupational and environmental health. The SWCOEH is housed within the Department of Epidemiology, Human Genetics and Environmental Sciences of the UTHealth School of Public Health. The SWCOEH was established in 1977 as a NIOSH-funded Education and Research Center (ERC), now one of 18 ERCs in the nation. In 1985, the SWCOEH became a World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Occupational Health. As of 2019, the SWCOEH has been officially approved as an affiliate of the NIOSH Total Worker Health program, strengthening a partnership spanning more than 40 years.

The mission of the SWCOEH Continuing Education (CE) Program is to serve as a training resource for professionals and decision-makers in the occupational and environmental health fields by delivering specialized courses in response to current training needs. Our ultimate goal is to improve occupational and environmental health. Our core subject areas are occupational medicine, industrial hygiene, occupational safety, hazardous substances and materials and worker well-being.
