Virtually via Zoom Friday, April 14th and Saturday, April 15th from 8AM - 5PM. Sunday, April 16th between 7am and 3pm. A 4th day of required clinic rotation will be scheduled by the CE office. All days must be attended.

This four-day course will offer training for Alabama Hygienists to provide local anesthesia (infiltration) administration to the dental patient. With 40 hours of CE training designed by Dr. Patrick Louis, and conforming to the Alabama State Board of Dental Examiners regulations, this course will present the participant with the basic mechanics to provide pain management.
o Course Description
§ The course will consist of 20 hours of lecture and hands-on clinical exercises.
§ Participants must complete 12 hours of online learning modules that will consist of a series of lectures and exams designed to prepare the hygienist for the course material and make it easier to understand. These modules need to be completed before you arrive for the live lecture portion of the course.
§ In addition, participants must return for an 8 hour-clinical rotation under direct supervision and keep a log of their experiences.
Required Text - The required text for the course is “Local Anesthesia for the Dental Hygienist” 3rd Edition by Demetra D. Logothetis (This book has study questions after each chapter. o Hygienist Evaluation
§ Final Exam with a grade of 70 or better is needed to pass the course.
· The exams will cover lectures and online learning modules.
· The format of the exam will be multiple choice
· Students are required to take a Pre-test exam and at the end of the course pass a Post-course exam.
§ Injections
· All hygienist will demonstrate the administration of local anesthesia under direct supervision. All hygienist will demonstrate administration of local anesthesia infiltration on manikins for all maxillary and mandibular infiltration techniques. They will also demonstrate at least 2 infiltrations on each other, under direct supervision.
§ Injection Log
· The Hygienist must keep a log of their clinical experiences. This should include all of the injections performed during the course and their clinical rotation. This should be submitted to the State Board along with their CE certificate in order to apply for a permit.
· Course Goals & Objectives:
· Introduce basic and advance concepts in pharmacology and armamentarium of local anesthetics and vasoconstrictors used in dentistry.
· Introduce basic and advanced concepts regarding anesthetic infiltration used in dentistry and its associated anatomy.
· Introduce complications and medical emergencies associated with the administration of local anesthetics and vasoconstrictors.
§ Understand nerve classification, resting state, membrane potentials, firing threshold, depolarization, repolarization and trigeminal neuroanatomy (central & peripheral)
§ Understand the pharmacology of local anesthesia and vasoconstrictors and associated drug interactions, complications and contraindications
§ Understand the theoretical & clinical differences in various local anesthetic agents commonly used in dentistry and their indication for use (concentration & recommended dosage)
§ Know the armamentarium used in local anesthesia. (short needle, long needle, syringe, carpule, topical anesthesia, etc.) and troubleshoot problems
§ Know the landmark and technique for maxillary and mandibular infiltration, potential problems and expected outcome
§ Understand why a local anesthetic injections may be ineffective
§ Know the special techniques and armamentarium for PDL anesthesia and its indications
§ Perform local anesthetic injections on manikins and in clinical situations and be prepared to answer questions regarding landmarks, dosage, complications, technique and armamentarium.
*As with any hands-on training course, the participant should realize that competency and proficiency requires repeated administration and periodic self-reeducation.
*Needle sticks will be directed to the UAB Emergency Room and treated at the expense of the registered hygienist.

Dr. Louis is a board certified Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and Fellow of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. Dr. Louis graduated from Louisiana State University School of Dentistry in 1984 and the University of Alabama School of Medicine in 1988. He received his certificate in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 1990. Dr. Louis joined the faculty in the department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 1990. He currently holds the rank of Professor in the School of Medicine and the School of Dentistry. He has lectured locally and nationally on multiple topics including dental implants. Dr. Louis maintains an active faculty practice at the University of Alabama at Birmingham with emphasis in dental implants, orthognathic surgery, temporomandibular joint surgery and esthetic and reconstructive.
