A Guide to Starting, Expanding, and Operating

This course is 30 credit hours (30 in-service hours/ 3.0 CEU credits) which meets every Monday, April 25 - June 13 from 6:30pm-9:00pm.
- 21 hours of classroom instruction (virtual and in-person)
- 6 hours of outside assignments
- 3 hours of coaching
- April 25 (1st class) and June 13 (last class) in person, other dates virtual

This course is an introduction to understanding the critical elements involved with starting, expanding and managing a child care program. It provides a comprehensive coverage of business issues affecting the child care industry, numerous real-world examples to help business owners understand how to apply the business management concepts presented in the curriculum, and incorporates material and activities and shared experiences to help them improve their business practices. Topics to be discussed include start-up and operating budgets, professionalism, marketing, licensure upgrade, bookkeeping, operation policies and procedures, record-keeping, and preparation for tax time with helpful tips.
Target Audience- New directors and family child care providers.
Learning Outcomes:
- Participants will explain strategies for managing an effective program operation.
- Participants will demonstrate an understanding of business practices relative to business goals, objectives and licensing standards.
- Participants will discuss basic requirements for an accounting system and basic recordkeeping forms.
- Participants will identify local, state and federal resources to increase needed income.
- Participants will identify business functions impacting child care business operations.
