The purpose of this session is to support educators by addressing the needs of dyslexic and multilingual learners. To begin, we will briefly discuss the origins and challenges associated with dyslexia and the specific needs of multilingual students learning English. We will then shift to practical strategies and practices for the classroom with a focus on the basics of English pronunciation and vocabulary acquisition. To that end, we will learn how the various sounds of English are produced as well as review several virtual tools to aid in teaching the various aspects of vocabulary instruction: word parts, word families, dictionary use, word frequency, and commonly occurring neighboring words. By the end of the session, participants will not only have a theoretical understanding of the needs of their students but also the knowledge and resources to instruct them more effectively.
Registration is $20.00
*A $10 discount will be applied to those who register for and attend all three sessions in 'The Basics of Teaching Reading' series.
