This Supervision Workshop is designed to help in supervising trainees who are motivated and focused, yet at times find themselves in a “holding pattern” in therapy with clients who seem passive, uninterested in change, or who continue making self-destructive choices. Supervisors will develop a fuller understanding of how building a strong alliance, and avoiding common therapist pitfalls, can powerfully change the course of therapy with these “resistant” clients. They will gain thorough knowledge of how to react to clients’ emotionally triggered reactions in ways that promote progress and positive change.
1) Participants will learn how to help supervisees build a therapeutic alliance and mutual goals which maximize client investment and engagement in therapy
2) They will understand the numerous contributions therapists make to client resistance, and how to help supervisees to modify these for more effectiveness
3) They will gain a clear understanding of Outcome and Process resistance and how to assist supervisees in responding to these reactions in therapy
