This continuing education program seeks to demystify the juvenile court competency determination process by educating mental health professionals about the juvenile competency evaluation process. Much like adults, competency determination is a complicated bureaucratic system. However, as often noted in pediatric medicine, it is a mistake to view children as small adults when developing treatment and rehabilitation policies. The course will review the evaluation process and examine the pipelines that result in the initial youth detention. In addition, innovative approaches to prevent the legal offense from occurring in the first place will be examined including the mental health services to treat children who have experienced trauma. This will be followed by a panel discussion on the topic.
By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
1. List the common pipelines that lead to the initial need for youth detention including mental health considerations.
2. Discuss Ohio Revised Code guidelines for the juvenile competency determination report.
3. Explain innovative and contemporary mental health services being used to reduce the need for youth detention through government policy and NGOs efforts.
