Course Description

This workshop will focus on trauma and how trauma can effect each person in different ways. The criterion from the DSM Chapter- Trauma- and stressor-related disorders will be discussed which includes the following disorders: Acute Stress Disorder, Adjustment Disorder, Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Reactive Attachment Disorder, and Disinhibited Social Engagement Disorder. Trauma will also be defined, symptoms outlined, types of trauma will be discussed and indicators will be presented to help with the assessment and diagnosis of trauma related disorders. Treatment methods will also be discussed and outlined. Resources will be provided including information from the National Child Traumatic Stress Network. Large and small group discussions will occur and Hollywood films will be used as case examples. Case examples will include films like Martian Child, Moana, Boy with the Green Hair, Call Me Crazy, etc.

 

 


Objectives

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

1. Define and identify the types and symptoms of trauma. Discuss the historical issues of child abuse and neglect and relate this history to the theoretical framework of trauma. Data will be provided and discussions will occur about how adverse childhood experiences can have long-term traumatic effects.

2. Discuss and outline the disorders in the DSM 5 chapter— Trauma- and stressor-related disorders: Acute Stress Disorder; Adjustment Disorder; Posttraumatic Stress Disorder; Reactive Attachment Disorder; and Disinhibited Social Engagement Disorder. Statistics for each disorder will be presented and discussed. Other associated mental health issues will be listed and discussed which can co-occur with trauma disorders (dissociative disorders, panic disorder, phobias, etc.).

3. Analyze case examples from Hollywood films to discuss how the character' are similar to the DSM diagnostic criteria for each disorder.

4. Discuss various treatment methods that may be utilized to assist in the treatment process when dealing with trauma and diagnosable disorders.

 

 


Instructor(s)

Linda M. Davis, PhD, LPC, LSW earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and a Master of Arts in Counseling and Psychology. While earning these degrees, she worked as both a child therapist and counselor. In 1985, she began working for Summit County Children Services and worked there for 30 years. During that time, she worked as an Intake worker, a Night Intake supervisor, a Crisis Intake Hotline Supervisor, an Educational Resources Supervisor, a Visitation Supervisor, and a Quality Improvement Manager.

While working at Children's Services, she earned her Ph. D in Counseling and Supervision from the University of Akron in 2008 and also completed a two-year Ohio Child Welfare Trainer Certificate Program in 1996. Since 1996, she has worked as an independent trainer and consultant. Dr. Davis teaches seminars at Cleveland State University and has taught classes at The University of Akron (Psychology of Learning, Child Development, Teaching and Learning Strategies, and Research). Dr. Davis currently teaches virtual and in-person seminars and workshops for colleges, social service agencies, and for the Ohio Child Welfare Training Program.

In 2018, Dr. Davis was awarded the Ohio Child Welfare Training Program's Linda Pope Trainer of the Year Award. In 2019, Dr. Davis was awarded the Continuing Education Presenter of the Year Award by Cleveland State University CASAL Department.

Dr. Davis' areas of expertise currently include mental health counseling, visitation, trauma, attachment theory, child development, research, supervision, ethics, foster care, and assessment.
