Loss is a natural part of life. However, it does not mean that we are prepared when it happens. Loss can, and many times is, painful and overwhelming. Acceptance is the challenge we encounter when confronted with grief. The grieving process is the path we can choose to learn how to cope with what is unacceptable and move forward. Whether you are an experienced grief counselor or wanting to add to your skills and interested in supporting others who mourn this course can be a resource that offers you an opportunity to think about your role in supporting the grieving.
This three-hour course will work with participants to understand the nature and process of grief, types of grief and stages of grief. Participants will become knowledgeable about strategies to use to support those that are going through the grieving process, the critical role of self-care and the process of gently moving forward following loss.

Learning Objectives:

1. Following the course the attendee can list the six central needs of mourning.

2. Following the course the attendee can name three methods of self-care to assist clients following a loss.

3. Following the course the attendee can define disenfranchised grief.

Amy Burzinski, a licensed independent social worker, counselor, received her master's degree from Columbia University School Of Social Work. Amy is an experienced clinician with a strong background in counseling and training on a wide range of mental health concerns. Amy's experience includes specialized training in body focused repetitive behaviors. Amy's experience and knowledge gained by working in schools, hospitals, employee assistance programs, mental health agencies, day programs and long term care facilities combine to form a core part of the educational courses she enjoys developing and teaching.
