As mental health practitioners, we have often been faced with the limitations of traditional talk therapy in working with clients with a history of trauma. Somatic psychotherapy provides an integrated, holistic model which also includes the responses of the client’s nervous system in renegotiating trauma. This program will introduce the concepts and tools of somatic therapy and provide resources for further learning.

After this program, participants will be able to:

1. Identify the components and functions of the autonomic nervous system.

2. Employ the concept of dual awareness in working with trauma.

3. Recognize symptoms of traumatic stress.

4. Identify stages of the threat response cycle.

Scott A. Whipple is a clinical social worker who has specialized in helping clients renegotiate trauma since 2003. He is a certified Somatic Experiencing Practitioner and a lead teaching assistant for Somatic Experiencing International. Mr. Whipple is also certified in EMDR. He graduated from SUNY Geneseo with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Theater/English, magna cum laude, received a Master of Fine Arts degree with honors from Case Western Reserve University, and received an MSW degree from New York University. He was an Adjunct Associate Professor at NYU's Silver School of Social Work for 15 years before relocating to Cleveland in 2020.
