Course Description

An article published in the American Journal of Medical Quality by Maese et al. (2020) noted that “The COVID-19 pandemic has pushed telehealth to the forefront in a way that 30 years of physician advocacy could not. The pandemic forced the alignment of the policy, technology, and economics of telemedicine.” These changes also created a revolution in the delivery of behavioral health services with the rapid growth of providers offering virtual therapy to millions of Americans. The expedited changes left many legal professionals, law makers, and mental health professionals playing catch-up to understand the shifting landscape of the legal and ethical considerations surrounding virtual therapy. This course will explore these considerations and discuss populations who may be disadvantaged by the rapid transition due to the digital divide.

Objectives

· Following this program attendees can describe populations who may be at risk of not participating in teletherapy due to the digital divide.

· Following this program attendees can list HIPAA regulations for teletherapy.

· Following this program attendees can list several benefits and challenges of teletherapy experienced by clients and mental health providers.
