Course Description

Cone-Beam CT (CBCT) imaging has revolutionized the way we see our patients by providing a tridimensional visualization of the teeth, jaws, and maxillofacial region. This course is tailored to dentists who are considering incorporating the tridimensional exams to their patient management, but also to those who already use CBCT and want to improve their foundation knowledge.We will discuss the CBCT foundations so that you can confidently decide when and how to take advantage of the benefits of this technology while meeting your individual needs. We will also discuss the clinical indications, advantages, limitations, ethical and legal issues related to CBCT, and what you need to consider while selecting the best machine for your practice. The final segment of the course will be dedicated to viewing software where the participants will have a chance to learn the basic functionalities of a CBCT viewer while reviewing the basics of tridimensional interpretation.

  • Identify the indications and limitations of CBCT imaging
  • Discuss the potential risks associated with the radiation exposure related to CBCT scans
  • Discuss the ethical and legal considerations of CBCT interpretation

 

In order to participate in this course to the fullest, please bring or borrow a laptop to have with you at the course for the CBCT software exercises.


Presenting

Saulo L. Sousa Melo, DDS, MSD, PhD, MS
Dr. Sousa Melo received his DDS degree in 2006, a MS in Dentistry degree in 2010, and a PhD degree in Dental Radiology in 2013, all from renowned Brazilian dental schools. Prior to moving to the USA, he taught Oral Radiology at Tiradentes University and worked as a radiologist at a private imaging center in his hometown Aracaju, Brazil. Dr. Sousa Melo was affiliated to the University of Iowa College of Dentistry since 2013, first as an Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology resident, and then as a Clinical Assistant Professor. He joined the OHSU School of Dentistry in January 2019 to serve as the director of the Oral Radiology Clinic and course director of the radiology curricula to the predoc and graduate programs.
Dr. Sousa Melo is a diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology. He serves on several committees at the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology (AAOMR) and is the current chair-elect of the Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology Section at ADEA (American Dental Education Association). He is an active researcher with research interests including indications and limitations of cone beam CT, and has published several book chapters and dozens of papers in international peer-reviewed journals.
