Art historian Sylvia Laudien-Meo guides us on a virtual tour of the photography of the Gilded Age - the era between the American Civil War and World War I. Photography exploded on the scene just as industrialization swept across America. As techniques and equipment improved, photographers were able to preserve for posterity this time of remarkable transformation, from the awe-inspiring wealth of the polite society to the abject poverty of a growing, incoming immigrant population.
