Virginity is historically rooted in establishing paternity. In Christian times, virginity was believed to be a gift from God, only to be released by a husband. But the word didn’t always mean “untouched.” Originally, it was used to describe a free woman—independent, autonomous, untied. In ancient Greece, virginity and virgin were once terms of power, strength, and independence.
