Dental Pharmacology Update and KASPER: Management of Pain in the Dental Office

Course Details

This course meets the requirements of HB1, and satisfies the continuing education requirement for Kentucky Dental License renewal as specified in 201 KAR 8:532, Section 10(e) concerning the use of the Kentucky All Scheduled Prescription Reporting System (KASPER) and addiction disorders.

Course Description:

Dentists are required to complete three (3) hours of continuing education that relates to the use of the electronic monitory system, pain management, or addiction disorders prior to renewing their license every renewal cycle. This course will discuss the current opioid epidemic, review the requirements of KASPER, discuss recent changes in KASPER, provide practical utilization of eKASPER for the practicing dentist, and discuss changes in management of acute dental pain.


Course Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to:


  • Understand the current opioid epidemic;
  • Describe the requirements of KASPER;
  • Discuss recent KASPER updates;
  • Discuss practical utilization of eKASPER for the dentist;
  • Identify the most commonly prescribed controlled substances in Kentucky;
  • Discuss management of acute dental pain;
  • Describe analgesic drug interactions and contraindications; and
  • Identify resources available to dentists.

Course Instructor

Rebecca H. Merke, RDH, DMD '92 Rebecca H. Mercke, RDH, DMD '92 is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Diagnosis & Oral Health at the University of Louisville School of Dentistry. She is course director for the Dental Hygiene Program’s Physical Diagnosis and Medical Management and Periodontics courses and supervises the Dental Hygiene and DMD Recall Clinics. Dr. Mercke has also taught Immunology, Anatomy and Physiology I & II, Human Biology, Medical Terminology, and Academic Success Seminars. Her career in dentistry has exceeded 31 years and includes experience in private practice in Bluefield, Virginia and Louisville, Kentucky. Dr. Mercke is a member of the American Dental Association.

All University of Louisville School of Dentistry Faculty are licensed practitioners in the Commonwealth of Kentucky and have no relevant financial relationship to disclose pertaining to this course.
