Early Literacy Strategies in Action: Oral Language

This training will focus on oral language and vocabulary acquisition. Research on the powerful connection between literacy, language and learning will be discussed. The structural components and stages of oral language will be described. Strategies that facilitate oral language development in young children will be shared.


Amie Duran holds a Master’s Degree in Special Education and Educational Administration from the University of New Mexico and the University of Texas at El Paso. She works as an Early Childhood Instructional Coach through Central Region Educational Cooperative, where she supports New Mexico Preschool teachers in Central and Northcentral New Mexico using the Practice-Based Coaching Model. Before joining CREC, Amie was a teacher, elementary school principal and charter school director with over 20 years of experience in education.




Norma Bender is an Early Childhood Instructional Coach with the Central Region Education Cooperative (CREC). She earned her Associates in Early Childhood Education and Family Support in 2000, Bachelors in Academic Studies in 2004, and her Masters in Elementary Education in 2009 from Western New Mexico University. Norma has over 24 years in Early Childhood Education. She is currently an ECIC for the districts of Cobre, Silver, Reserve, Deming, and Quemado.
