This professional learning meets on Wednesday, March 1st, 2023 from 8:30-12:00.

Early Literacy Strategies in Action: Oral Language

This training will focus on oral language and vocabulary acquisition. Research on the powerful connection between literacy, language and learning will be discussed. The structural components and stages of oral language will be described. Strategies that facilitate oral language development in young children will be shared.

Facilitator

Dr. Cynthia Gomez is an Early Childhood Instructional Coach serving the districts of Los Alamos, Zuni, Roswell, Magdalena, and North Valley Academy Charter.  She earned her Bachelors in Elementary Education in 1997 and her Master's in Educational Management and Development with a focus on Reading in 2003. She also holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis on Educational Learning and Technology from New Mexico State University (NMSU). She earned an ESL endorsement from Eastern New Mexico University, in 2004, and has an undergraduate minor in English, graduate minor in Reading, and a graduate minor in Educational Learning Technologies.

Cynthia has 23 years' experience in education, 8 of which were in teaching K-3 classrooms, 14 as an assistant principal/coordinator, and 1 as a facilitator with Head Start.


Kathleen Roland is an Early Childhood Instructional Coach at Central Region Educational Cooperative. She supports New Mexico PreK Programs through FOCUS professional development training, and Practice-Based Coaching. Kathleen's great passion is supporting educators in their critical work, ensuring positive outcomes for New Mexico's young children. Her background includes 26 years of Early Childhood classroom teaching experience, 4 years District Literacy Coach, M.A. in Elementary Education from UNM, and B.A. in Biology from Macalester College, St. Paul, Minnesota.
