Agenda

8:30 AM - 10:30 AM - Common Inpatient Coding Errors: What is the Impact on Risk Adjustment, Revenue, & Data Quality?

Joy King Ewing, RHIA, CCS, CCDS

Many coders & auditors today are still focusing primarily or only on coding issues that impact the DRG. In addition, as hospitals migrate to using CAC products, editing behind the CAC to correct errors and ensure data quality seems to be lacking. As a result, we see data accuracy & quality going downward rather than improving. In addition, with the full implementation of Value-Based Purchasing by CMS, coding for risk adjustment has become a crucial part of reimbursement for hospitals. Many coders/hospitals are still not coding for HCCs (Hierarchical Condition Categories) and are missing out on capturing proper risk adjustment. This presentation will focus on common coding errors & data quality issues we see in auditing, as well as some discussion on how risk adjustment coding can impact reimbursement dollars.
