About the Presenter

Denise Blackburn, RHIA

“What opportunities are there for Coders? Let me tell you about the Vendor world.”

Denise has been an RHIA since 2007, she had been an RHIT since 1995 and has held many positions within the HIM Arena from facilities to vendors. Most recently she was Director of Commercial Coding for Optum 360. She has been Adjunct Faculty at Schoolcraft college since 2003 where her main focus has been Intermediate CPT (HIT 234).

Denise Popa BSHA, RHIT, CPC

Compliance Auditing for HIM

Denise transitioned to the healthcare field in 2007. Her experience includes coding, physician education, chart analysis and auditing. She has worked on both the professional and facility side, specializing in cardiology, interventional radiology and vascular procedures. As an auditor, she reviewed charts across specialties such as injection and infusion services and interventional radiology according to Medicare standards. She identifies trends, evaluated risk, kept abreast of OIG activity and looked for any potential systemic issues. Denise worked at the University of Michigan for about 2 years, expanding her skill set by learning about multiple insurances, payment models and cutting-edge technology and has currently transitioned back to her previous position at Trinity Health.

Sharin L. Cancilla, B.S., RHIT, C.C.D.S.

CDI from the Coding Point of View.

Clinical Documentation Integrity Specialist- Beaumont Health System, Farmington Hills.

Michigan born and raised; Shari has worked locally for over 30 years in her HIM career. A 1989 graduate of Schoolcraft College, she began her career as an inpatient coder at Botsford Hospital the same year. After 18 years as a coder, she was hired as the first Clinical Documentation Specialist at Botsford at the inception of the program. During the past 14 years, Shari has spoken numerous times at Schoolcraft College to the HIM students about careers in CDI, presented at Internal Medicine and Orthopedic Department meetings and rounded with Internal Medicine attending and Resident physicians. She is a founding member of the Michigan Chapter of the Association of Clinical Documentation Integrity Specialists, and is a past-President of MACDIS. In 2011, she earned her Certified Clinical Documentation Specialist certification and is currently the senior member of the CDI staff at Beaumont Health. Shari just recently earned her Bachelor degree in Health Information Administration at the University of Toledo and has promised her family that she will not be going back to get her Masters. She feels that a strong HIM background is crucial to a successful CDI program, but a blended CDI program helps you work smarter, not harder.

Kelly V. Canter, MHA, RHIT, CCS

From Coder to Product Designer – A non-traditional career pathway.

Ms. Canter has expertise in coding and compliance specializing in ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT/HCPCS coding, utilization review and data analytics. Her experience includes conducting coding, medical necessity and documentation audits, providing clinician and coding staff education, revenue cycle management, and value-based purchasing incentive programs. Currently, she is a Revenue Cycle Design Manager for a large HIM technology company. She is an active member of the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) currently serving her last year on the Commission on Certification for Health Informatics and Information Management (CCHIIM). She has also served two terms as President of the Lake Huron Michigan Health Information Management Association (LHMHIMA).
