One of the biggest opportunities and challenges in healthcare right now is the emergence of healthcare consumerism. It's been long talked about but now healthcare consumerism is here and policymakers, healthcare payers, health IT developers, and other medical professionals need to adapt to a world where consumerism and health meet – where the patient is also a consumer. There are evolving roles for HIM professionals to build more collaborative relationships between patients and providers. This is our time!

Optimizing EHR Clinical Documentation

Nikki Blaze, RHIT, CCS

Physicians are documenting more in the patient's chart with the electronic health record adoption, and clinical practices are no longer operating the same. Over time, non-standardized processes within the EHR have led to increasing use of copy/paste to complete clinic notes leading to irrelevant information captured in the note. Chart closure time affects coding and billing and could negatively impact a practice's bottom line. This presentation will share tips to revise the EHR to meet the documentation needs and reduce the burden of documentation through standardization.

This presentation will look at the transition many HIM departments made to a virtual setting and present lessons learned throughout this journey. Specific areas of focus will be on what is happening today, what the virtual HIM department looks like, how to (virtually) protect the workforce and information, as well as HIM role in the management of telehealth.
