Webinar Description

This course serves as a review of the clinical and microscopic features of oral premalignant lesions and oral squamous cell carcinoma. The diagnosis and management of commonly encountered premalignant conditions of the oral cavity, such as leukoplakia and erythroplakia, will be discussed. In addition, this course will include a review of the varied clinical manifestations of oral squamous cell carcinoma. The role of soft tissue biopsy and biopsy techniques will also be covered.

Educational Objectives:

 

Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to:

 

  • Recognize clinical lesions that are considered premalignant, such as leukoplakia and erythroplakia
  • Understand the role of tissue biopsy in everyday clinical practice and when/how to biopsy lesions
  • Recognize the varied clinical appearances of oral cancer
  • Develop sound treatment strategies and referral systems for management of patients with potentially cancerous oral lesions

Cancellations must be received in email to cde@dentistry.unc.edu The cancellation request must include: the name of the course, name of the person registered, name of the person requesting the cancellation, and the reason for the cancellation.

Presenting

 

Scott Peters, D.D.S.

 

Dr. Scott Peters is an Assistant Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology at Columbia University Medical Center, College of Dental Medicine. He received his B.A. in History from Columbia University, his D.D.S. from Columbia University, and completed his post-graduate training in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology from Columbia University/New York Presbyterian Hospital. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, a fellow of the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, and the recipient of the Academy's William G. Shafer Award. Dr. Peters has been published in journals, including The Journal of the American Dental Association, Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology, Oral Radiology, Journal of Endodontics, Head and Neck Pathology, and Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, among others. He is a member of the Columbia University Oral Diagnostics Biopsy Service, and the clinical oral pathology service located at ColumbiaDoctors Midtown. In addition to his clinical responsibilities, Dr. Peters teaches various courses including histology, pathophysiology, and oral pathology and stomatology at Columbia. He also serves as an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the Rutgers School of Dental Medicine and provides oral pathology training to the dental residents at Kings County Hospital Center, Woodhull Hospital, and Harlem Hospital. Dr. Peters is a member of the American Dental Association and the New York State Dental Association. He serves as the new dentist representative on the New York State Dental Association Council of Hospital Dentistry and as a member of the AAOMP Committee on Professional and Public Relations.

This continuing education has been planned and implemented in accordance with the standards of the ADA Continuing Education Recognition Program (ADA CERP) through joint efforts between the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Adams School of Dentistry and the Association for Continuing Dental Education (ACDE). The UNC Continuing Dental Education program is an ADA CERP Recognized Provider. UNC CDEs term of recognition is May 1, 2019 through December 31, 2023. ADA CERP is a service of the American Dental Association to assist dental professionals in identifying quality providers of continuing dental education.
