CE Course Description

The role of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) in head and neck cancer and its association with oral and oropharyngeal disease will be discussed alongside the role of the dental practitioner in the work-up and counseling of a patient and their families. The treatment options of the disease process will be reviewed with case examples. Vaccine related controversy: the who, when, where and why will be reviewed as well as the role a dental practitioner can play.

Your patient has survived treatment, now what? Surveillance protocols, extraction and implant rehabilitation guidelines, HBO therapy and the management of the possible treatment complications including osteoradionecrosis will be discussed.

Course Objectives
At the completion of the course participants will be able to:

  • Identify the difference between the management of oral and oropharyngeal associated cancers
  • Adequately counsel a patient on their new diagnosis of HPV related head and neck cancer
  • Understand treatment options
  • Have a working knowledge of the role of vaccines in the prevention of HPV related cancers
  • Prevent and manage post-treatment complications that may arise
