Course Details

Course Description:

This course is designed to assist the dental healthcare provider in their treatment of patients with dental pain using opioid and non-opioid analgesics. Case-based scenarios will be presented to help establish appropriate analgesic use, risk assessment, safe prescribing practices, patient education and awareness of the opioid epidemic in the United States. Participants will gain knowledge of ADA recommendations for best practices while prescribing opioids for dental pain.



At the completion of this course, participants will be able to:
  • Discuss Opioid Use Disorder (OUD), overdose deaths and misuse of prescription opioids
  • Describe safe and competent use of opioids for managing acute, moderate & severe dental pain
  • Discuss systemic complications and identify signs of chronic opioid use
  • Identify and educate patients at high risk of OUD and opioid overdose
  • Describe serious drug interactions of opioids with other controlled substances
