Penn GSE Virtual Institutes bring Penn's faculty and resources to teachers, educators and leaders across the globe. In these innovative professional learning modules, participants engage in real-time, online group sessions as well as reflect and learn at their own pace in asynchronous sessions. Institutes typically span three consecutive half days, allowing participants to accelerate their learning while continuing to fulfill their professional obligations.

Participants who successfully complete this Virtual Institute will receive a Penn GSE Certificate of Participation.

About the Program

The demands of the 21st Century require students who can investigate intentionally, think critically, and argue persuasively. The Teaching Document-Based History Institute helps teachers support students to engage in authentic history inquiry.

Developed for history teachers for grades 6-12, this Institute focuses on helping teachers learn how to leverage three key instructional practices while teaching online: establishing background knowledge, supporting historical reading, and facilitating document-based discussion.

Participants will be equipped with practical strategies and techniques for an online implementation of Stanford History Education Group's Reading Like a Historian curriculum, which engages students with authentic sources and compelling questions. Participants will also learn how to design student-driven historical inquiry activities that capitalize on the vast array of online digital resources. Educators will leave this Institute with a plan for how to implement document-based history curriculum in the classroom.
