Teaching Math Routines for Computational Fluency

View all Penn GSE Virtual Institutes

Tuesday, August 17, 2021 - Thursday, August 19, 2021

Penn GSE Virtual Institutes bring Penn's faculty and resources to teachers, educators and leaders across the globe. In these innovative professional learning modules, participants engage in real-time, online group sessions as well as reflect and learn at their own pace in asynchronous sessions. Institutes typically span three consecutive half days, allowing participants to accelerate their learning while continuing to fulfill their professional obligations.

Participants who successfully complete this Virtual Institute will receive a Penn GSE Certificate of Participation.

About the Program

The Teaching Math Routines for Computational Fluency Institute equips teachers with practical strategies to engage their students in high-cognitive demand activities and rich disciplinary practices in both virtual and hybrid classrooms.

This Institute addresses the powerful shifts seen in math classrooms across the country to support student discourse, build number sense and computational fluency, and help students engage with the Standards for Mathematical Practice.

Developed for K-8 math teachers and instructional coaches, this program draws on usable research and best practices to help teachers facilitate engaging math classroom routines that support number sense and are responsive to student thinking. Teachers will leave this Institute with the knowledge and skills they need to successfully plan and implement number sense routines in their classrooms.

What people say after taking this Institute:

  • 'My students are engaged and excited to learn!' - First grade teacher
  • 'Teachers have been able to garner much more discourse and engagement at the beginning of their lessons.' - Assistant Principal
  • 'I have seen my students' number sense improve!' - Second grade teacher
  • 'Kids are having great conversations about numbers.' - Sixth grade teacher

What You'll Gain
  • Deepen your knowledge of effective teaching strategies to engage K-8 students in rigorous and meaningful discourse around numbers and operations
  • Practice planning and facilitating 'Number Talks' and other math routines for online and face-to-face settings
  • Collaborate with other educators in grade-level groups
  • Draft plan to implement math routines in online and/or face-to-face classroom settings
