LEA MORGAN, OTR/L, is a pediatric occupational therapist with 24 years of clinical experience. She has spent her career working with children with a variety of impairments and has worked to support children with "unseen disabilities" that others may not understand or accommodate for.  For example, she is passionate about helping other healthcare professionals understand the implications of Sensory Processing Disorder on their profession.  She created SIPP (Sensory Informed Pediatric Practice CEUs) to make valuable content readily available to other community professionals, including dental professionals.

Course Description

Have you noticed an increase in atypical behaviors and responses from your patients? Are you struggling with disrupted visits due to patient discomfort? Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) is more prevalent in children than autism, and as common as ADHD. Understanding SPD will help you make adjustments in your practice, to increase positive outcomes.

  • Overview of Sensory Processing - What is it and why a dental office is such a challenging environment for children with SPD.
  • Eight Specific Areas of Sensory Processing Disorder - Including how to support weaknesses in each area during a dental visit.
  • Additional Considerations for the Dental Professional - Including info on waiting room, social stories, intake information, dental fear and being proactive.

Learning Objectives

Upon course completion, participants will be able to:

  • Understand sensory processing and how it impacts your dental patients.
  • Develop confidence to utilize sensory strategies to improve the quality and experience of office visits for everyone.
  • Improve patient and parent satisfaction.
  • Decrease difficult and cancelled visits.

This course is appropriate for general dentists, hygienists, and dental team members.
