Learning Objectives


At the conclusion of the course, participants will understand that:

  • Motivational Interviewing is a therapeutic technique dentists can use to help promote behavior change, including adherence and safe use of controlled substances
  • Motivational Interviewing has been demonstrated to be effective across health care settings and does note increase overall interview time
  • Patients are on a fluctuating spectrum of “readiness to change,” which can be influenced by the skillful dentist
  • The four guiding principles of Motivational Interviewing include expressing empathy, developing discrepancy, rolling with resistance, and supporting self-efficacy
  • Basic techniques of motivational interventions include asking open-ended questions, eliciting change talk, summarizing, pros and cons, and DARN questions
