Dental Sleep Medicine Mini-Residency 2022-2023 (LIVE-STREAMED ONLINE AND ON CAMPUS)

Tufts University School of Dental Medicine's Dental Sleep Medicine Mini-Residency is a 6-month program where participants engage with world-renowned experts in the field through lectures and workshops, both live-streamed online and in person. Between modules, program directors provide guided self-study and intermodule sessions.

 

This program is split into three 3-day modules and two half-day intermodules:

 

 

  • Module I: Live-Streamed Virtual: October 13-15, 2022
    • Intermodule Session: Live-Streamed Virtual: December 10, 2022, 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM EST
  • Module II On Campus: January 19-21, 2023
    • Intermodule Session: Live-Streamed Virtual: February 25, 2023, 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM EST
  • Module III On Campus: April 20-22, 2023

 

 

COVID-19 RULES & REGULATIONS:

Program Director

LEOPOLDO P. CORREA, BDS, MS, Dr. Correa is committed to supporting academic learning as well as clinical practice and has worked as a faculty member at TUSDM Craniofacial Pain Center, for almost 20 years. During this time, Dr. Correa worked alongside faculty members to maintain the highest level of excellence in patient care and chair-side training for residents and dental students. Dr. Correa is an active member of professional associations such as ADEA, ADA, AADSM, AASM, and WSS. He is a Diplomat of the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine (ABDSM), Fellow of the International College of Dentists (ICD), and visiting professor in different dental schools. He received his certificate of achievement in Temporomandibular Disorders and Orofacial Pain under the guidance of his mentor Dr. Noshir R. Mehta, and his Master’s of Sciences Degree at Tufts University. Dr. Correa incorporated the teaching of Dental Sleep medicine into the pre and postgraduate programs, and developed various CE programs at Tufts.
In addition to the service Dr. Correa provides within TUSDM, he also plays a leadership role outside the institution, having organized multiple community service events both locally and internationally for faculty and students.
Dr. Correa has mentored students and has taken on an increasing number of significant leadership responsibilities during his tenure at TUSDM, where he is currently appointed Director of the Division of Craniofacial Pain in the Department of Diagnostic Sciences. He also serves as Program Director of the division’s two advanced graduate education programs, the Dental Sleep Medicine Fellowship and the Orofacial Pain Advanced Graduate Education program.
The international reputation Dr. Correa holds is evident from his multiple well-attended continuing education courses, which receive overwhelmingly positive feedback. These include the Temporomandibular Disorders Mini-residency, Dental Sleep Medicine Mini-residency, Dental Sleep Medicine Comprehensive Introduction, and Pediatric Dental Sleep Medicine Mini-residency. He also has been invited to present at institutions across multiple continents, including North America, South America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. 


Program Coordinators

NOSHIR R. MEHTA, D.M.D., M.S., For over 49 years, Dr. Mehta has been a part of the faculty at the Tufts University School of Dental Medicine. In 1976, he co-founded the first school based TMD center in the country which grew into the current Craniofacial pain center at Tufts. He is currently a senior adviser to the Craniofacial Pain, Headache and Sleep he co-founded. Dr. Mehta has a special interest in orofacial pain and dental sleep medicine. He lectures nationally and internationally on these topics. Dr. Mehta has received numerous awards from various dental organizations including the prestigious Hayden Stack Award from the American Academy of Craniofacial Pain and, most recently, 2015 Clinician of the Year from the Massachusetts Dental Society. He has published extensively in peer reviewed journals, is editor of the sleep section for the Journal of Craniomandibular and Sleep Practice and sits on the editorial board of several other international publications.

 

 

JONATHAN PARKER, D.D.S., Dr. Parker is a graduate of the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry and an adjunct faculty at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine. He has treated patients with snoring and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) for over 29 years and has a full-time practice in dental sleep medicine in Minneapolis, Minnesota since 2001. Dr. Parker has lectured internationally on the role of the dentist in managing snoring and OSA. He has authored a number of research articles and abstracts evaluating the effectiveness of oral appliance therapy for OSA.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW:

 

Tufts University School of Dental Medicine's Dental Sleep Medicine Mini-Residency has been designated as an Accredited AADSM Mastery Program Provider. Attendees of accredited Mastery Program Provider programs are eligible to earn the AADSM Qualified Dentists designation and apply for the ABDSM certification exam through the Mastery Track.

 

This Mini-Residency Program is divided into three modules, each consisting of three days of lectures, workshops, and inter-module guided learning. This allows participants to incorporate their learning into their clinical practice as they progress.

 

This program is designed for dentists looking to expand their understanding of dental sleep medicine. It emphasizes the connection between sleep medicine, dental sleep medicine and TMD.

  • Develop a deeper understanding of sleep, the physiology of sleep, chronobiology (circadian rhythms), breathing and non-breathing related sleep disorders, sleep related movement disorders, upper airway resistance syndrome, adult and pediatric obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), and the health consequences of sleep deficiency

  • This course does not guarantee a participant board certification but rather supports their foundational academic pursuits in Dental Sleep Medicine.
