Description: This event will interrogate discourses around the psychosocial construct of resilience and explore its potentially negative impact on Black women's mental health and wellbeing through research, the art of storytelling, and other interactive activities.

 

 

Learning Objectives:

  • Gain a deeper understanding of the psychosocial construct of resilience and the history and harms of strength among Black women in the U.S (United States).
  • Learn about the prevalence of stress and mental illness among Black women in the U.S.
  • Gain a deeper understanding of unique barriers to treatment and mental health help seeking among Black women with complex trauma and implementation of critical healing frameworks to reach Black women with mental illnesses.

 


Presenter(s)

Dora is a 2nd year PhD student in the School of Social Work and the Founder of Even Me Lord, Inc, a Faith-based Therapeutic Coaching Firm for High Achieving Black Women and The Healing Project, which is a grassroots organization dedicated to Black women's trauma healing through the art of storytelling. Dora earned both her Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Wayne State University, with a clinical specialty in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Dora has experience working as an outpatient therapist to children and families and community organizing with organizations supporting sexual assault survivors through the art of storytelling. Dora currently serves as the Co-Chair President of the Doctoral Social Work Association in the School of Social Work and is passionate about advocacy and social justice for people from underrepresented and historically oppressed groups. Dora's research interrogates discourses of resilience for Black women and its potentially negative impact on their mental health and well-being.
