This course will provide participants an overview of the development of the United States Criminal Justice System and will examine the history of mental health treatment in the United States. Further, this course aims to present barriers to accessing adequate mental health treatment within the penal system. Finally, participants will be informed of practices and resources for individuals who are engaging in the community re-entry process.

Learning Objectives:

  1. After this course, participants will be able to explain the role deinstitutionalization played in the increase in the prison population.
  2. After this course, participants will be able to identify systemic factors that contribute to the inadequacy of mental health treatment for individuals who are incarcerated.
  3. After this course, participants will be able to identify alternate treatment options prior to incarceration, as well as aftercare opportunities for those releasing from state custody.
