Dr. Rema Reynolds Vassar is a former teacher, counselor, administrator, community organizer and has done everything from clean to lead schools. Currently, she teaches aspiring leaders across the world. Her research is centered in urban schools serving culturally diverse students and families. Specifically, Dr. Vassar examines issues of parent engagement as they relate to Black families and student achievement, instructional strategies educators employ to honor and incorporate literacies students bring to the classroom, cultural competencies school counselors acquire through their respective preparatory programs and the roles of school administrators in community and civic development. Her forthcoming books focus on engaging underrepresented parents in schools and provide practical guides and strategies for parents and school officials.
