One-Time Training Requirement for DEA-Registered Providers:

The Medication Access and Training Expansion Act, or MATE Act, was included in the omnibus spending bill that passed Congress at the end of 2022. This new law requires dentists to complete eight hours of training before receiving or renewing a Drug Enforcement Administration registration.

At the time of your next scheduled DEA registration submission (but not required for licenses renewing before June 27, 2023) registrants must:

  • Complete 8 hours of qualified training on safe controlled substance prescribing.
  • Check a box on your DEA registration submission affirming that you have completed the required training.
  • Retain copies of all certificates of completion.

This applies regardless of whether a registrant is completing their initial registration application or renewing their registration.  It also applies to all drug schedules (Schedules II, III, IV, and V).

To help dentists comply with the new requirements, the ADA has created an FAQ addressing common questions the Association has heard from members, available here: https://www.ada.org/resources/practice/legal-and-regulatory/dea-registration

All courses that qualify for this requirement will be labeled, and you may utilize the search function below to sort by this requirement.
